In 1986, Jo Gartner (Austria) retired from the 24th race at Daytona in a promising position. A little later, the Viennese achieved a sensational victory in the 12-hour race in Sebring in a Porsche 962 together with Bob Akin and Hans-Joachim Stuck. On the night of May 31 to June 1, 1986, at around 3:12 a.m., Gatner crashed into the left-hand guard rail of the Le Mans 24-hour race on the Mulsanne straight at over 300 km/h and died upon impact.
