Jezebel was a domineering, ruthless, unjust, manipulative, unscrupulous, and ruthless woman. The story of Jezebel in the Bible is recorded between 1 Kings 16 and 2 Kings 11. The Bible relates that Jezebel was the daughter of Ethbaal, the king of the Sidonians who, in fact, ruled over all of Phoenicia. Therefore, although Jezebel rose to the royal throne of Israel, she was a foreign woman descended from a Phoenician clan. Her father's name, Ethbaal, means "Baal is alive," and this helps us understand the influence she had within her family. Jezebel was the wife of King Ahab of the Kingdom of Israel from 874 to 853 BC and the mother of three children: Ahaziah, Joram, and Athaliah. Perhaps Jezebel would have passed unnoticed through the pages of history had it not been for her illegal marriage to the heir of King Omri of Israel. There was a prohibition on marriages between Hebrews and the Canaanite peoples of the Levant. Even so, the prince of Israel married the princess of the Sidonians, likely to seal the political and economic treaty between the two states. It is believed that this marriage occurred as a sort of compensation for Damascus' hostility toward Israel, in an agreement brokered by Omri, Ahab's father, to reaffirm an alliance between Tyre and Israel around 880 BC. What happened after this marriage guaranteed perpetual infamy for Jezebel's name. Jezebel found her greatest adversary in the prophet Elijah. In fact, it was the prophet Elijah who prophesied Jezebel's terrible death, which ended in her being devoured by dogs because of her injustice and wickedness.
