Meyers Manx & The Brubaker Box | Unique Vehicles Based off the Iconic VW Beetle
Today Jonee Eisen takes us through two made in California vehicles based on the ever so popular VW Bug. The Meyers Manx was produced by his Fountain Valley, California company, B. F. Meyers & Co. from 1964 to 1971, in the form of car kits applied to shortened chassis of Volkswagen Beetles. Also known as a dune buggy its almost instant popularity combined with its simplicity will be also its Achilles' heel. Less popular but equally awesome looking the Brubaker Box was a car designed by Curtis Brubaker. In 1972 after a deal with Volkswagen could not be reached, Brubaker began buying completed Beetles and converting them to Boxes. However, this scheme did not prove profitable, and very few Boxes were ever constructed. And here at the museum you can admire one of the few originally built by Brubaker before he sold his company to the LA based Automecca who tried themselves, unsuccessfully to produce the box. www.meyersmanxcafe.com The Meyers Manx Café was inspired by the iconic Meyers Manx dune buggy and the vibrant beach culture of 1960s Southern California. Located inside the Petersen Automotive Museum, the café is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and weekday happy hours. —— CHAPTERS 00:00 - INTRO 00:24 - introducing the 1966 Meyers Manx, the kit car 01:15 - a 1 piece fiberglass tub 02:40 - A trip around the Baja Peninsula 03:17 - What is a kit car? 04:50 - Engine at the back 06:10 - So simple to copy 06:45 - Brubaker and the Van craze of the early 70s 07:30 - The 1 door bus 08:00 - Inside the Brubaker Box 08:44 - Not a kit car 09:15 - It came without bumper 10:35 - Difficulties in the manufacturing process 11:25 - The Meyers Manx cafe —— GET TICKETS TO THE MUSEUM https://www.petersen.org/tickets —— CONNECT WITH US ON SOCIAL MEDIA Like us on Facebook: facebook.com/petersenmuseum Follow us on Instagram: instagram.com/petersenmuseum Follow us on TikTok: tiktok.com/petersen_museum
