From 1940 to 1975, the Brazilian government removed patients with Hansen's disease – formerly known as leprosy – from their families and isolated them in a colony, where they were subjected to inhumane treatment. There, the patients themselves assumed administrative roles and, even without any training, became nurses, police officers, and prison guards.
