"Heavy Crown" - A Song From My Gifted Autistic Son's Perspective | LOUD MIND

Heavy Crown — LOUD MIND Written from my oldest son's perspective — in his own voice. My son is seventeen. He's autistic — "level 1," gifted, high-functioning, all the words people use. He taught himself an entire language at six years old, alone, word by word. People see the brain, the scores, the gift. They say "you don't even look autistic," like it's a compliment. What they don't see: the smartest room is the loneliest one. The mask that's so good it even fools him. The panic that hit one night an ocean away from home — a storm in his chest so loud his girlfriend thought he was having a seizure. It wasn't. It was the weight of a mind that never stops. So I wrote this in his voice. Because I carried that same storm at twenty-eight — and I'm still standing. And that means he will be too. The crown is heavy. But he never has to wear it alone. For every gifted, "twice-exceptional," high-masking kid carrying a weight nobody sees. You are more than your gift. And you're not alone. 🎧 Wired different. Still here. — LOUD MIND is outlaw country-soul written from inside a real neurodivergent family — by an autistic father raising three autistic children. LYRICS: [Verse 1] Six years old at recess, sittin' with my back against the wall Kids were speakin' all around me, but their world didn't fit at all So I built myself a door — taught my tongue a foreign land Word by word, alone, I drew a map out of no-man's land They call it a gift, and yeah, it opened up the sky But nobody asks the kid who built the door what he was runnin' from — or why [Verse 2] "You don't look it," they all tell me, like they're handin' me a prize 'Cause I learned to wear a mask so good it even fools my eyes They applaud the brain, they quote the scores, they love the little show But the smartest room I've ever been in is the loneliest one I know Everybody wants the answers — nobody asks about the cost Of a mind that maps the universe but can't tell you when it's lost [Chorus] You see a crown — I feel the weight You see the gifted one — I'm just a kid tryin' to carry his own head straight I ain't askin' you to fix me, I ain't broken — I'm just loud inside I'm more than the smart one, more than the scores, more than the mask I hide So if you're gonna love me, love the storm and not just the shine 'Cause this crown gets heavy — heavy — and it's mine [Verse 3] Then a voice across the water heard the me behind the grades She didn't ask me to be smaller, didn't flinch at how I'm made And they said it wasn't real — too far, too strange, too much to try So I packed a bag at seventeen and crossed the ocean and the sky Smartest thing I ever did was the one they called insane: Bet the whole map I'd drawn since six on a heart that knew my name [Chorus] You see a crown — I feel the weight You see the gifted one — I'm just a kid tryin' to carry his own head straight I ain't askin' you to fix me, I ain't broken — I'm just loud inside I'm more than the smart one, more than the scores, more than the mask I hide So if you're gonna love me, love the storm and not just the shine 'Cause this crown gets heavy — heavy — and it's mine [Bridge] Then one night an ocean from my home, my chest became a drum Shakin' so hard she thought I was dyin' — but it was fear of what I'd become Fear of life, fear of the future, fear this mind would eat me whole Till I remembered somethin' Daddy told me, and it steadied up my soul: He carried this same thunder at twenty-eight — the very storm, the same And that man is still standin' — so this fire ain't my shame It's the proof that I'm his blood. We don't sink. We learn to swim. The crown sits so much lighter when I ain't wearin' it alone — I got him [Final Chorus] You see a crown — now watch me carry the weight I'm the gifted one, the different one — and I'm learnin' to walk with my head straight I ain't askin' you to fix me, I was never broken — just loud inside I'm more than the smart one — I'm the whole storm, and I ain't gonna hide So love me like my family does — the thunder and the shine This crown is heavy — heavy — but it's mine Still here. Still his. Still mine.
