Rather than simply letting him operate on his own, they are giving him a babysitter. The Jedi say it is to keep their distance from the operation to avoid it looking too obvious. To Anakin, it is the Jedi making bold claims and not even having the principles to stand by them. Yet Anakin cannot ignore these requests and accepts the mission with great reluctance. His heart is not in it, and Palpatine notices. He sees how Anakin observes him, but also the flickering anger and resentment on his face. It is just how he predicted when he baited the Jedi to assign him this task.
