The title refers to Djebel Ouargla—a mountain in the commune of El Gor, in Tlemcen Province—not to be confused with the Wilaya of Ouargla. It is a tribute to the resistance fighters and martyrs of the Algerian Revolution who took refuge in this mountain outpost, where they fought valiantly for freedom against French colonial forces. The song belongs to the “Alaoui” repertoire, a traditional militant music and dance form from Western Algeria, historically performed by male combatants to celebrate victory, express anti-colonial resistance, and affirm pride in the land. As with many Algerian traditions, “Alaoui” continues on through devoted cultural guardians who breathe life into its heritage forms.
