A Buck Showed Up Within 24 Hours Every Time I Did This (Here's Why)

From 2020 to 2022, I was monitoring a signpost rub with a trail camera. Every time I went in to pull the card, I'd freshen that rub with forehead gland scent. And within 24 hours, that buck would show up and work it again. Sometimes within an hour. I knew it was working, but I always assumed it was the scent. A study out of the UGA Deer Lab published in December 2025 may have just explained why the response was so consistent — and why it might have been more than smell. Researchers found that rubs emit a measurable UV photoluminescent glow that deer can see and we can't. Forehead gland secretions contain phenols — compounds that are independently photoluminescent. Freshening that rub may have literally relit the UV signal, not just refreshed the smell. That hasn't been directly tested, and I can't say for certain what compounds were in the bottle I was using.
