On March 17, 1945, five H8K2 flying boats took off from the Takuma Naval Air Group in Kagawa Prefecture to conduct a nighttime search for a US task force that had arrived off the coast of Kyushu and Shikoku. While three planes were lost in the action, Boat No. 95 engaged in a fierce aerial battle with US night fighters, and despite suffering heavy damage from over 170 hits, barely managed to survive.
