Beethoven, Sonata/Sonatina Nr.20 in G, Opus 49/2 - Historical Tempo Reconstruction - Wim Winters

Carl Czerny's list of Beethoven's works contains only 29 piano sonatas instead of today's list of 32. Together with the sonata opus 79 (which Beethoven considered to be a sonatina as well), both of the opus 49 pieces were labeled 'only' as sonatinas by his famous student. It is not without any logic: published in 1805 but composed about 10 years earlier, they are of a different universe than the 'full size' sonatas. But that doesn't make them any less enjoyable! 0:00 Allegro, ma non troppo (Half = 104) 6:40 Tempo di Menuetto* (Quarter = 112) Tempi after Carl Czerny, read in whole beat (   • How Fast did Beethoven and Chopin really P...  ) *Basically there were two types of minuets in use at this time: the earlier (and faster one - later evolving into the scherzo and the Waltz) - and the 'modern' late-18th century (danced) minuet, like this one. The tempo difference (and notation!) between both is quite bit: ranging from about dotted half note 76-88,... for the first one, this type of 'newer' minuet is given tempi of about quarter 100-112. Where the older type will use only eight note as fastest note values, this type uses 16ths as well.
