The Effects of Winter On Apple Trees
On this week's DAFT (Dumb Apple Farmer Talks): Paul discusses the effects of winter on our apple trees and why the hell we even try to grow fruit here in Iowa, and what happens when you get really cold temperatures in winter? Our orchard was mostly planted in the early part of the 1980's, and some of the apples we grow don't fare well in very cold environment. Couple that with rootstock with thin bark that's really responsive to environmental factors, and you'll start to notice some of the damaging effects of winter on our trees.
