The 2025 Washington Accords, backed by the United States and Qatar, were an ambitious peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (#DRC) and Rwanda aimed at ending one of Africa's longest-running conflicts. By linking security commitments with economic cooperation and access to the DRC's vast critical mineral resources, the agreement sought not only to silence the guns in eastern DRC but also to reshape the region's economic future. Yet, one year on, peace remains elusive. Fighting continues, accusations of treaty violations are mounting, and millions of civilians remain displaced.
