The Long Road to Millions of Bats | Zambia Part 2

Zambia Part 2 takes us deeper into the reality of overlanding: beautiful places, long roads, small victories, bad weather, car admin, city chaos, and the kind of detours that turn a simple plan into a proper story. After leaving the open plains and wildlife of Liuwa, we make our way through Kafue, spend time at Kasabushi Camp on the banks of the Kafue River, and then head into Lusaka for the less glamorous side of life on the road: servicing the Cruiser, sorting out admin, and trying to survive the traffic with some sense of humour intact. But the real pull of this chapter lies further north. Kasanka National Park is home to one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife spectacles: the annual gathering of millions of straw-coloured fruit bats. Getting there, however, is not as simple as pointing at a map and driving. Rain changes the plan, the shortcut disappears, friends are left behind, and the long way round becomes the only way forward. From South Luangwa to the Great North Road, the journey takes a few unexpected turns before Kasanka finally comes into view. And when we finally get there, the reason for the whole detour becomes very clear. 📍 Featured in this episode: Liuwa Plains National Park Kafue National Park Kasabushi Camp Lusaka South Luangwa Great North Road Kasanka National Park
