Dying Light Gameplay on Nintendo Switch - One of the Most Impressive Ports on Switch 1
Hey, welcome back to Barely a Gamer! So today we are playing Dying Light Platinum Edition on the Nintendo Switch Lite, and the fact that this game runs on this hardware the way it does is honestly an achievement worth talking about. What Makes This Edition So Special When Dying Light originally launched back in 2015 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, it was praised for its massive open world, fluid parkour system, and genuinely threatening zombie AI. Nobody expected it to ever run on Nintendo Switch. But in October 2021 developer and publisher Techland delivered exactly that. The Platinum Edition includes the full award-winning base game, The Following expansion with its own story and vast new map, The Bozak Horde challenge mode, the Hellraid mode, Cuisine and Cargo, the Ultimate Survivor Bundle, cosmetic skin packs, and a large collection of additional skins and weapons. The result is one of the most content-rich action games available anywhere on the Switch eShop, and the value here is genuinely hard to argue with. What Is the Game About? You play as Kyle Crane, an undercover operative sent into the quarantined city of Harran to recover sensitive information related to a viral outbreak. Shortly after arriving, Crane becomes infected himself and is forced to work alongside survivors while navigating competing factions and increasingly dangerous threats. The narrative is not going to blow you away with major emotional moments, but it creates real tension and gives you strong motivation to explore and push forward. The game also features gyro aiming, motion controls for melee combat, HD Rumble vibrations, and touchscreen support on Switch, along with local and online co-op support, letting you play with friends by simply placing two consoles next to each other. Performance and Visuals on Nintendo Switch The Switch version does make visual compromises to run on the hardware. Textures are lower resolution, shadow quality is reduced, there is more noticeable pop-in, and draw distances are shorter compared to PC, PS4, or Xbox versions. That said, the atmosphere, city design, art direction, and lighting all hold up surprisingly well, and most players stop noticing the downgrades after the first hour or two because the gameplay is so engaging. On the frame rate side, the game targets 30 FPS, but the reality is a little inconsistent. During exploration, it mostly runs close to that target, but the frame rate frequently hovers around 33 to 34 FPS rather than sitting at a clean locked 30, and in heavier combat scenarios or crowded nighttime sequences, it can dip down to 26 or 27 FPS. A properly locked 30 FPS would have made the experience noticeably smoother and more stable. But when you step back and consider that we are running a full open-world AAA zombie survival game on Switch 1 hardware, you have to give Techland real credit for what they achieved here. Some compromises are simply the price of playing a game this ambitious in portable form. Should You Play It? Dying Light Platinum Edition is one of the best mature action games available on Nintendo Switch and the sheer amount of content included makes it an easy recommendation. It cannot match the visual fidelity of other platforms and the frame pacing has its quirks, but it delivers the core Dying Light experience in a portable format that still feels surprisingly solid. If you want a deep, content-packed, genuinely thrilling open-world game on your Switch, this is one of the best options on the entire platform.
