--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a Japanese television promo for "Stanley," broadcast in Japan as "Zankoku Hebi Jigoku" on TV Tokyo's Thursday Roadshow / Mokuyo Youga Gekijo on June 23, 1983. This promo itself was aired on June 16, 1983. The film was theatrically released in Japan on April 28, 1973. To be honest, I am a little surprised that this film received a theatrical release in Japan at all. And not just any release — it was released for the Golden Week season. Still, the Japanese title contains three words that feel very much like the chaotic film-market vocabulary of the time: "cruel" "snake" "hell" Put together, they create the wonderfully blunt Japanese title "Zankoku Hebi Jigoku," which could be translated roughly as "Cruel Snake Hell." In that sense, it feels exactly like a Japanese theatrical title from the early 1970s. The original title is "Stanley." Other animal-horror films of the period, such as "Willard" and "Ben," were able to use names as memorable emotional hooks. In this case, however, the Japanese release title seems to have chosen raw poster impact over emotional nuance. The following section contains spoilers, but I would like to analyze the narration of this promo. In only about 54 seconds, the narration explains a surprisingly large amount of the story. First: a shocking experience in the Vietnam War; the murder of the main character Tim's father; Tim's loss of trust in other people; his isolated life in the mountains with snakes. Up to this point, it is still basic setup. But from there, the narration moves very quickly. Tim hears that his father was killed by a snake dealer named Tomkins. He puts snakes into a swimming pool. He takes revenge in a brutal way. He then takes Tomkins' daughter Susie away. He demands that she marry him. She refuses. Angry, Tim sets the snakes on Susie. And finally: the snakes suddenly turn against Tim and attack him instead. In other words, the promo gives away the ending. The narration almost tells us the whole movie. And yet, or perhaps because of that, it somehow makes the film a little more tempting to check out. That, too, is part of the strange force of Japanese TV movie promotion at the time. These recordings document Japanese television film promotion practices of the early 1980s, including narration style, editing rhythm, and on-screen typography. They also preserve the small choices, accidents, and traces of production that usually disappear from official film history.
