This was the provocative question that the great medieval historian #JacquesLeGoff started with in his biography of this Capetian king, published in 1996. This massive book was a great bestseller, with more than 60,000 copies sold. The biographical approach was surprising, coming from a historian of the "Annales" school, heir to Marc Bloch, Lucien Febvre and Fernand Braudel, for whom the history of great men was typical of the traditional positivist approach to be banished, too concerned with superficial aspects and not enough with social structures. But Le Goff, in his biography of Saint Louis, adopted an unusual method, consisting of deconstructing the different images of his hero, produced by the different types of sources according to the concerns and therefore the biases of their authors. To discover the real Louis IX, it was necessary to put aside the various legends and find in certain sources, notably the account of Joinville, one of the king's companions, the means to reconstruct a somewhat authentic portrait. For this new episode of La grande H., Julien Théry welcomes Marie Dejoux (Panthéon-Sorbonne University), who has just edited a collective work entitled Saint Louis after Jacques Le Goff. New Perspectives on the King and His Government, as well as Xavier Hélary (Sorbonne University), a historian of French royalty in the 13th century and particularly of the 7th Crusade, at the end of which Louis IX met his death.
