Sir Keir Starmer has resigned as Prime Minister today. In a speech outside Downing Street, Sir Keir made the major announcement just 72 hours after saying he would fight any leadership contest. It comes as Sir Keir is reported to have spent the weekend mulling his future after Andy Burnham's win in the Makerfield by-election last week. The former mayor of Greater Manchester is due to be sworn in as the constituency’s MP today. Sir Keir is reported to have been told by members of his Cabinet, including Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, that he should set out a timetable for his departure. No 10 had previously said his position remained unchanged from Friday, when he said he will not 'walk away' and will stand in any potential contest.
