While traveling through Hawassa in Ethiopia, I experienced one of the most unexpected situations of my journey. As I made my way toward a mountain summit, I was suddenly advised by a local preacher that I should not continue alone due to safety concerns. I was told I could potentially be robbed if I went forward without protection. Shortly after, I found myself being escorted by two local security guards carrying large sticks—not for wildlife, but for protection on the route. What started as a simple exploration turned into a very unusual and eye-opening experience in rural Ethiopia. Afterwards, I explored more of Hawassa, experiencing the calm, the culture, and the reality of off-the-beaten-path travel in Ethiopia.
