Supernovas, las explosiones que crearon el universo - Joseph Anderson | Antofagasta 2026

Supernovae, the explosions of stars at the end of their lives, not only illuminate the cosmos but are also responsible for the origin of many of the elements that make up our world. Their study is key to astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, and physics. These explosions form black holes and neutron stars, affect star formation and the evolution of galaxies, and can even be used to measure distances in the universe. Joseph Anderson, an English astronomer and head of the science office at the European Southern Observatory in Chile, shares his knowledge of supernovae, their importance to astronomy, and how their study has evolved throughout history. He also shows how new telescopes will allow the detection of thousands of supernovae every week, offering an unprecedented window into the expanding universe.
