Fish farming is gaining popularity in North Ossetia. Fish farms have sprung up in several districts in recent years. One such enterprise is Ostrov Aquaculture. The company breeds trout. According to employees, the process of growing fish from eggs is labor-intensive, but also fascinating. Ostrov breeds two types of trout: amber and rainbow. Each tank holds up to 10 tons of fish, and there are 38 of them in Ardon. The trout receive special care: spring water, no warmer than 18 degrees Celsius, and feeding six times a day, especially while it's light. Employees say the fish need to rest in the evening. "We use imported feed. A Danish company is one of the best feed producers. Domestic feed is still inferior in quality, so we use imported feed. And the fish respond well to good growth rates. "On average, it takes 14 to 16 months for the fish to reach market size. This means 2 to 3 kg," explained Sergey Perchatkin, Operations Director of Ostrov Aquaculture LLC. The fish is shipped chilled for sale outside the republic, most often to Moscow and Rostov. The eggs, on the other hand, are brought from neighboring countries—Sweden and the United Arab Emirates. They are stored in the new fry hatchery—the heart of the enterprise, where up to 300,000 eggs are laid. Fishermen say they need to be carefully monitored. After a month and a half, the eggs hatch into fry. They also enjoy special conditions here. The fry hatchery in Ardon was built a year ago. It has 16 pools, each holding 20,000 to 40,000 fry. They are kept here until they reach 1 gram, which takes an average of two months. The Ostrov company now has a presence in Darg-Koh. The fish farm opened there last December. Large-scale construction of new tanks began in January, and six months later, their number has increased to 60. Twenty of them have already been commissioned. Another 40 will be filled with fish by the end of June. Here, as in Ardon, each tank can hold up to 10 tons of fish. The company plans to expand further. "We plan to build a fry production facility and a hatchery to completely enclose the site. Automatic feeding is also in the future. Currently, we feed manually," added Sergey Perchatkin. Another unique feature of the Ostrov company is its liquid oxygen technology. It was introduced a year ago. Fish farmers say it allows them to increase their space, and therefore, the number of fish. The company has ambitious plans. The director admits that the goal is to reach a global level and become the largest company in Europe. In the last year alone, the trout population here has increased fivefold. This year, they will produce over 1,000 tons of fish. The company's management says such figures are unprecedented in Russia. Furthermore, construction of a third fish farm in the village of Kardzhin will begin this fall. They plan to open approximately 200 tanks there, which will increase the number of jobs.
