One of the most important symbols of Russia and Russian culture is the bell. It's no coincidence that many Russian composers have sought to convey its sound: directly (by introducing real bells into the score) or indirectly (by recreating the timbre using orchestral, piano, and choral tones). Perhaps this theme found its most vivid expression in the work of Sergei Rachmaninoff. Literally every one of his works features bells ringing in a multitude of tones—from bright and solemn to fatally tragic and mournful.
