In the spring of 1982, the people of Papantla, in northern Veracruz, saw a widow doing something that almost no one thought sensible. Amparo Nájera was planting vanilla on a plot of land her own father-in-law had declared lost years before. Not just a few plants. Two hundred and fifty vanilla cuttings, one by one, perched on cocuite stakes she herself had driven into the red soil of the yard. The orchid needed shade, moisture, and patience, and that patch of scrubland, according to everyone, wasn't even good for corn anymore. At first, most of the neighbors assumed the widow wanted to occupy herself after three years of silence in her home. But as the weeks passed, the planting continued. Row after row, stake after stake, until the entire yard was covered with green vines that were just beginning to climb. Her daughter Chavela, barely ten years old, walked behind her carrying a basket of tender vines, handing them to her carefully. Nearby, lying in the shade of an orange tree, a yellow dog named Limón half-dozed, watching the work with one half-open eye.
