Exercises After Scoliosis Correction Surgery Fusion

Scoliosis correction surgery using fusion of the spine is one of the more common spine surgeries in adolescents. This is indicated when the scoliosis curve progresses past 45 degrees. Even though this surgery is a very large fusion, many orthopedic surgeons don't refer for physical therapy after this surgery. There are many reasons this might be, but one of the biggest is they don't think it is needed. The problem with this is that I see patients in my clinic all the time after fusion surgery that are having other issues related to the changes from the surgery. It isn't that the surgery was bad or not indicated, it is just that the body is not used to the new orientation. If you have had scoliosis correction surgery, please make sure your doctor has cleared you before doing these exercises. Also, these are best done under the supervision of a Physical Therapist trained in scoliosis treatment.
