Portals [Music from 'The Third']

Download: jhowardjaadwa.bandcamp.com ~ "Music from ‘The Third’" is a mini-album collecting works composed for the contemporary dance work, "The Third". Conceived with the Australian Dance Theatre on Kaurna Country, "The Third" explores the body as an archive, as well as the intersection of First Nations and Western systems of knowledge holding. For "Music from ‘The Third’", I used a just-intonation tuning system based on whole-number frequency ratios of 3 and 7 as devised by La Monte Young. Coupling these distinctive harmonic relationships with electronic and sample-based instrumental timbres, I fell upon a unique and immersive sonic ecosystem. Once melodic and harmonic content was put in place, these works seemed to reveal themselves to me naturally. For this release, I have reimagined the score for "The Third" as a dedicated listening experience, structured to take the listener on a sonic journey through legacies and archives. All tracks composed, performed and recorded by James Howard. Original music commissioned by Australian Dance Theatre for The Third, choreographed by Artistic Director Daniel Riley.
