A pilgrimage church (German: Wallfahrtskirche) is a church to which pilgrimages are regularly made, or a church along a pilgrimage route, like the Way of St. James, that is visited by pilgrims. Pilgrimage churches are often located by the graves of saints, or hold portraits to which miraculous properties are ascribed or saintly relics that are safeguarded by the church for their veneration A Catholic parish and pilgrimage church featuring the famous Gothic winged altarpiece by Michael Pacher and a stone shrine of significant importance. Intense radiation is present in the central section of the church. The age of the cult site is unknown—it is likely pre-Christian. The church dates back at least to the 12th century. A chapel was built over the stone shrine in 1713. The Wolfgang Fountain is located next to the church, though it is not associated with any cultic traditions.
