A3 NEWS Veneto 06/16/2023 - VENICE - The Venice Financial Police have dismantled a criminal syndicate that defrauded people by contacting them through call centers and promising easy profits. 54 people have been reported, hundreds ensnared. Hundreds of people have fallen victim to a criminal syndicate, with branches primarily in Eastern Europe, operating in the unregulated international currency market, online trading. The investigation by the Guardia di Finanza, under the direction of the Pordenone Public Prosecutor's Office, began following a tip from a woman from Pordenone: 54 people of Ukrainian, Serbian, Czech, Hungarian, Russian, and Israeli nationality have been reported. There are 141 confirmed victims throughout Italy, though there could be more, including 34 residents of various areas of the Northeast: 6 from the Venice area, 7 from Verona, 2 from Vicenza, 3 from Treviso, 2 from Padua, 7 from Udine, and 3 from Pordenone. The scammers primarily exploited psychological factors, so much so that some attempted suicide upon realizing the scam. The skilled organization used specially created online platforms: the charges include aggravated fraud, illegal collection of savings and provision of payment services, and money laundering.
