Marigold is one of Dave Grohl’s earliest lowkey masterpieces, way before Foo Fighters were even a thing. It originally came out as Color Pictures of a Marigold, recorded solo under his side project Late! for the Pocketwatch cassette back in the early ’90s. It’s super raw and stripped down, kinda dreamy but still heavy emotionally. You can already hear where he’s headed, even if it’s way more lo-fi and fragile than anything he’d do later with the Foos. Then it gets this crazy life cycle in rock history: Nirvana turns it into a B-side for Heart-Shaped Box later it gets pulled into Foo Fighters live sets, especially in acoustic and semi-unplugged eras and it basically turns into one of those deep-cut fan obsession tracks By the time Foo Fighters played it in Milan in 2026, it wasn’t just a filler moment at all. It hit like a time capsule opening on stage. One of those songs where you can literally feel how far Dave Grohl’s been carrying that melody through different eras of his life. Bottom line: it’s a sleeper classic — born on a basement tape, passed through Nirvana’s orbit, and finally fully realized live with Foo Fighters.
