Let's talk about Preparation and Improvisation for a Dungeon Master. How much material should be prepared for a campaign? How much for a session? Which parts should be left to improvisation? We'll explore together the relationship between Preparation and Improvisation and see how these two "techniques," often separated from each other, actually speak to each other. Preparation could be of great help when we need to engage in Improvisation scenes during sessions. The important thing is to understand that Preparation does NOT mean erecting rigid boundaries around the campaign, adventure, or one-shot we'll all play together. But it does help us better understand the world in which we'll set our adventure. It helps us master context and offer a coherent experience to players, even when we're improvising, to give voice to the characters' choices and actions. Preparation can help us be better Improvisers, if managed correctly! [ 7:07 ] After giving you my perspective on Preparation and Improvisation, I'll try to show you what and how much I prepare for my campaigns. In this part of the video, we'll dig through my nefarious notes and show you how I collect notes on the background of a campaign. [ 13:02 ] In this part of the video, I'll show you how I prepare my Sessions. I'll show you what information I jot down in my notes and what I leave described more generally, to allow for improvisation later in the game. I might seem crazy to the Masters who "improvise everything," but this has always been my personal method, and I wanted to share it with you!
