The French army, led by the Foreign Legion and paratroopers, decided to use the "hedgehog" tactic to draw the Vietnamese into a battle in which they hoped to defeat them... But nothing went as planned: French air force, fighters, and bombers were ineffective in attacking the ground, transport planes failed to deliver sufficient supplies, and Vietnamese anti-aircraft weapons took a heavy toll.
