But after Egyptian police broke her arms and sexually molested her in November 2011 at the height of the protests against the Mubarak regime, she wanted to celebrate survival and chose a tattoo on each arm as the way to do it. Mona Eltahawy is an award-winning columnist and an international public speaker on Arab and Muslim issues. Her opinion pieces have been published frequently in media across the world, including The Washington Post and the International Herald Tribune and she has appeared as a guest analyst in several media outlets. She calls herself a proud liberal Muslim. In 2005, she was named a Muslim Leader of Tomorrow by the American Society for Muslim Advancement and Newsweek magazine named Ms Eltahawy one of its "150 Fearless Women of 2012".
