Watton Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Norfolk, and around 20 miles west, and slightly south, of Norwich is the town of Watton. Just east of the town centre is the Church of St Mary. This dates all the way back to the 12th century, featuring a Norman tower with an octagonal belfry. The church underwent rebuilding work in the 1840s which involved widening the aisles, upping the seating capacity to 480. As such, this is the only church in Norfolk that is wider than its length. A market charter is believed to have been granted to Watton in the early 13th century, making its market over 800 years old. In 1674 a great fire broke out in Watton, destroying around 60 houses. In 1679 the town's distinct clock tower was built (featuring prominently just after the 5-minute mark), with the purpose of having its bells warn the townsfolk in the event of another fire. In 1869 a railway station opened in Watton. This formed part of a line between Thetford and Swaffham. The station, along with the entire line, was closed to passengers in 1964 as part of the Beeching cuts, where over 2,000 stations across Britain were closed in order to, supposedly, promote road travel.
