Who has the right to inherit a deceased person's property?

When you lose a loved one it hurts already, but unfortunately for most families their pain doesn’t end there. Extended family members come in and claim the things the deceased left behind leaving the nuclear family with nothing. This begs the question - Legally who has the right to inherit a deceased persons’ property?
