1970's Drum Sounds - Recording and Setup (Part 1)

In this video, I break down how to capture the warm, punchy, and vibey drum tones of the 1970s — inspired by legends like Steve Gadd, Jeff Porcaro, and Jim Keltner as well as classic albums like Fleetwood Mac's Rumors. I walk through the full setup of my 1982 Pearl kit (with concert toms), the mics I used, and how to blend analog and digital recording workflows using an 8-track Otari MX-5050 and Pro Tools. You’ll see how I: Dampened the drums using DIY rings made from old drumheads Mic’d each drum close-up for tight, controlled tones Set up my tape machine for simultaneous recording to tape and DAW Patched it all together using a simple patchbay configuration 🎧 Want to get these kinds of drum tones in your own productions?
