Album: Paradise Now (Discofoon), Netherlands 1969 "Purple Sky" is one of the most fascinating moments from Group 1850's visionary second album Paradise Now (1969). Published today alongside "The Wolf of Velvet Fortune"    • The Wolf of Velvet Fortune - Group 1850 (P...  , it reveals another side of one of the greatest hidden treasures of European psychedelic rock. Formed in The Hague after evolving from Klits, Group 1850 became one of the Netherlands' most adventurous underground bands. Their distinctive name was inspired by the year engraved on an old clock belonging to Peter Sjardin's grandfather. Rather than following the British psychedelic movement, they forged a unique identity through acid rock, space rock, experimental electronics and fearless studio exploration. One of the album's most remarkable stories is its release. Instead of appearing through a conventional record label, Paradise Now was issued by Discofoon, the label of the Dutch department-store chain Vroom & Dreesmann (V&D). One of Europe's boldest psychedelic albums was therefore sold alongside everyday household goods, a unique chapter in rock history that later made original pressings highly collectible. Peter Sjardin also designed and built his own homemade electronic instrument, the "Organiser." Years before synthesizers became common in rock music, it produced the mysterious textures and atmospheric soundscapes that became one of Group 1850's unmistakable sonic signatures.
