The AMPLIFIER YOU NEED vs the ONE YOU WANT: Yamaha R-S300 vs. Octave V110 SE

The used market is full of good, cheap amplifiers and receivers. These budget-friendly models may not be pretty, and they may not really compete with high-end hi-fi for best sound quality, but you can often find budget models with ample power, decent sound quality, and desirable features for $150 or less. I'm not talking about vintage models but, rather, old models made after the golden age of hi-fi stereo. Are these BPC (black plastic crap) amps and receivers really that much worse than amplifiers with MSRP of $10K and up? Conversely, are the high-end amps that much better? If the question is just about need, and you need amplified music in your life, then a cheap receiver may satisfy that need.
