Viktor Vasnetsov was a renowned master of genre and historical painting; his paintings were acquired by collectors Pavel Tretyakov and Savva Mamontov. Vasnetsov's painting "Bogatyrs" was one of the first uses of the epic theme in the history of Russian painting. In addition to painting, Vasnetsov illustrated books, created sketches of architectural structures, and painted churches in various Russian cities. Viktor Vasnetsov was born on May 15, 1848, in the Vyatka Governorate (today the Kirov Region) to a priest. His parents strove to provide their children with a well-rounded education: they read scientific journals and taught them drawing. Viktor Vasnetsov's first works were landscapes and scenes of rural life. The nature in his paintings is largely based on the landscapes of Vyatka: winding rivers, hills, and dense pine forests. In 1858, Vasnetsov entered a theological school, then a seminary. Old Russian literature sparked his interest in antiquity. During his Moscow period, the artist painted scenes from the history and fairy tales of Ancient Rus. One of his first canvases, "After the Battle of Igor Svyatoslavich with the Polovtsians," was exhibited at the 8th Exhibition of the Itinerants. Pavel Tretyakov purchased the painting. Vasnetsov also met the philanthropist Savva Mamontov and became a member of his Abramtsevo circle. The Abramtsevo area also appeared in other Vasnetsov paintings: birch groves and winding rivers, ravines and ponds overgrown with sedge. Here, in 1880, the artist painted "Alyonushka." Viktor Vasnetsov also tried his hand at architecture. He created sketches for buildings on the Mamontov estate, and the Church of the Savior Not Made by Hands in Abramtsevo was built based on drawings by Vasnetsov and Polenov. The artist also created sketches for his own home and studio, Ivan Tsvetkov's mansion, and the main façade of the Tretyakov Gallery on Lavrushinsky Lane in Moscow. In early 1885, Adrian Prakhov, a professor at St. Petersburg University and one of Vasnetsov's teachers, invited him to paint the newly completed St. Vladimir's Cathedral in Kyiv. Vasnetsov called the cathedral's decoration his life's work—he devoted approximately 11 years to it. The artist said, "For a Russian artist, there is no work in Rus' more sacred and fruitful than decorating a church." A total of approximately 400 sketches were created, covering over 2,000 square meters. The cathedral was consecrated in 1896 in the presence of Emperor Nicholas II and his family. After St. Vladimir's Cathedral, the artist painted churches in St. Petersburg, Gus-Khrustalny, Darmstadt, and Warsaw. Until the end of his life, Viktor Vasnetsov continued to paint fairy tales. In 1898, he completed the painting "Bogatyrs," which he had been working on for 25 years. * * The Viktor Vasnetsov House Museum is located in Moscow at 13 Vasnetsov Lane and is part of the Tretyakov Gallery museum complex. Vasnetsov designed the mansion in the neo-Russian style himself and lived there from 1894 to 1926. The museum opened in 1953 after relatives transferred the house and art collection to state ownership. * * At the request of our Channel's friends—who, by the way, are some of YouTube's best viewers—I'm sharing a simple and kind account of our pensioner's life in a small village, nestled in a nearly remote forest...
