Untapped Potential: An Assessment of Municipal & Industrial Water Efficiency Opportunities in the US

Across the United States, water efficiency improvements in homes, businesses, institutions, and water distribution systems could save 14 million to 34 million acre-feet per year. In a recent study, Untapped Potential: An Assessment of Municipal and Industrial Water Efficiency Potential in the United States, researchers from the Pacific Institute found that even basic upgrades to meet existing national standards and reducing excessive water use could cut municipal and industrial water use by 25 percent nationwide. The most ambitious efforts, based on adoption of efficient technologies and strategies already available today, could reduce water use by up to 60 percent, equal to levels last seen in the 1960s. In this WaterSense Webinar hosted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Dr. Bruk Berhanu, senior research specialist at the Pacific Institute, will present and discuss the methodology and key findings from this groundbreaking study. The presentation will also highlight water savings opportunities and recommendations for commercial, industrial, and institutional (CII) water use to build on the progress made in water efficiency over the past decade.
