What has changed in these decades since the era of asylum histories, when the very concept of mental health as a public health issue was not yet conceived because it was solved by the exclusion of some people within psychiatric hospitals? Everything has changed. The hospitals that no longer exist, the social context of communities, the knowledge of psychiatry, the very conditions of individual experiences and social relationships. Thinking about mental health today requires a major renewal that draws lessons from what has happened to date to find the perspectives that only a critical approach, respectful of complexity, can provide. A psychiatrist, former director of the Mental Health Department of the ULSS 2 Marca Trevigiana, he was the Italian vice president of the Italian Society of Psychiatry, an association of 8,000 Italian psychiatrists. He taught Psychiatry at the University of Padua and is the author of numerous scientific and popular publications on mental health topics. He is currently President of the Museum of the History of Medicine and Health (MUSME) in Padua.
