How to Become an MFT Couples Therapist in California - Intro to Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy
Sentio University is a nonprofit graduate school in Los Angeles, California offering a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) degree. Our 20 month hybrid program combines weekly live online classes with intensive in-person residencies in Los Angeles and is approved by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) and the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) to meet all requirements for LMFT licensure in California. Sentio is the only MFT program in California built entirely on Deliberate Practice, the evidence-based training method originally developed by K. Anders Ericsson and adapted for psychotherapy by Sentio faculty. Students do not just learn about therapy. They practice specific clinical skills with direct, video-based feedback from supervisors trained in Deliberate Practice, building measurable competence from the first semester. Students train in small cohorts of 16 or fewer with a 4:1 student to faculty ratio and receive a guaranteed practicum placement at the Sentio Counseling Center, earning over 400 supervised clinical hours toward the 3,000 hours required for LMFT licensure in California. Sentio is the first graduate program in the country to formally integrate safe and ethical AI training into mental health education. Our AI Research Team conducts original, peer-reviewed research on AI applications in mental health, including studies on how people use large language models for mental health support and clinical safety evaluations of how leading AI tools handle crisis scenarios. Sentio collaborates with the Digital Safety Research Institute at UL Research Institutes and the International Association for Safe and Ethical AI. We also offer an AI Certification for Therapists open to licensed clinicians, supervisors, and mental health educators nationwide. Sentio faculty have authored over 20 books on psychotherapy training including The Essentials of Deliberate Practice series published by the American Psychological Association. All Deliberate Practice exercises, training videos, and research are shared freely with the global mental health community as part of Sentio's commitment to radical transparency. Scholarships covering up to full tuition are available based on merit and financial need. Applications are open now.
