From there, we made our way through the town and along the Ahr River to the Teufelsloch (Devil's Hole). The climb is quite challenging. We ascended on narrow paths and many steep switchbacks. I hadn't expected it to be so steep here in the Ahr Valley. It was a real sweat! But it was worth the effort! After the strenuous start to the hike, we finally reached the Teufelsloch. This mystical rock arch offers a breathtaking view of Altenahr and down the Ahr River. Legend has it that the devil himself carved the hole into the rock face. He had enjoyed himself so much in the Ahr Valley (and especially the wine) that he didn't want to return to hell. When his grandmother came to get him, he angrily hurled her against the rock face. ' ... Next, we head to Engelsley. This route is a bit of a hidden gem and is rarely found on hiking websites. The steep and exposed ascent is indeed quite challenging. Surefootedness and a head for heights are essential here. In some sections, the path leads vertically upwards over large rock steps. We almost have to do a bit of scrambling. Once at the top, a fantastic view awaits us at the small summit cross, overlooking Are Castle, Altenahr, and the Ahr River loop near Altenahr. Afterwards, we hike along the Ahrsteig trail to Saffenburg Castle. The Ahrsteig is a popular long-distance hiking trail that traverses the entire Ahr Valley for over 100 km. We soon see our next destination: Saffenburg Castle, the oldest hilltop castle in the Ahr Valley, rises majestically above the landscape. Although only the foundations remain today, the view over the surrounding vineyards is breathtaking. It certainly makes you want to sample the delicious Ahr wine. We satisfy this craving with a visit to the Kloster Marienthal winery. Here we treat ourselves to a well-deserved break and enjoy a glass of wine along with a selection of delicious tarte flambée. My personal favorite: the tarte flambée with goat cheese and honey. Refreshed, we continue our hike and pass the government bunker. This structure was once the most secret building in the Federal Republic of Germany. During the Cold War, it served as a protective bunker for the government. Today, you can book guided tours and see the underground, nuclear-proof rooms. A command center, as well as work and sleeping quarters, are on display. However, the bunker is only open to the public on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Our hike continues along the Red Wine Trail to Ahrweiler. This trail is known for its picturesque vineyards and offers numerous opportunities to taste the famous Ahr wine. Once in Ahrweiler, we stroll through the beautiful old town with its half-timbered houses and cozy cafes. The imposing city wall surrounding Ahrweiler is still almost completely intact. We stayed overnight at the Steigenberger Hotel, which reopened in June. My room is super cozy, and I have a great view of the spa gardens. We're heading down there now. Here in the wine lounge, you can really unwind after a long day, and we'll enjoy another glass of wine. It's lovely to watch the sunset right by the river.
