Although gestational age is commonly calculated by the date of the last menstrual period (LMP), it's very important to perform a first-trimester ultrasound to calculate gestational age based on the crown-rump length (CRL) of the embryo or fetus, as this is the most accurate parameter for calculating gestational age correctly! What does this mean? If the difference between the gestational age calculated by the date of the last menstrual period (LMP) and the gestational age calculated by the first-trimester ultrasound is less than seven days, this means that the gestational age calculated by the date of the last menstrual period can be used! In this video, I also show a real first-trimester ultrasound image and how the embryo's crown-rump length is calculated and its importance in determining gestational age in the first trimester!
