The city is known by several names: "Masyaf," "Masyad," or even "Masyab," which means "the impregnable fortress." Perhaps its pleasant climate or abundant rainfall explains its name, "Masyaf," which literally means "a place where vegetation grows late and where there is abundant rain in the summer." However, its name has changed according to historians; it was known as "Masyat," "Masid," and "Masyit." Yaqut al-Hamawi, in his geographical dictionary, called it "Masyad," perhaps due to its fame for hunting. It is also said by older generations that it was once called "al-Umraniyah." Location Masyaf is located on the eastern slopes of the Summaq or Bahra Mountains (the Latakia Mountains), west of the city of Hama, about 40 km away, to which it administratively belongs. Located at a crossroads connecting central Syria with the coastal region, Masyaf forms a natural gateway overlooking the Ghab Plain and marks the beginning of the mountain ranges bordering the plain to the west. It serves as a meeting point and link between the coast and the interior, situated approximately 60 km from the city of Tartus. Fortified by mountains that embrace it on its western, eastern, and northern sides, Masyaf boasts an unparalleled tourist destination, rich in water, lush greenery, breathtaking scenery, and numerous historical sites scattered throughout the area. The Masyaf Castle is one of several castles located in the Hama Governorate of the Syrian Arab Republic. Situated near the city of Masyaf, it is distinguished by its significant historical importance, particularly during the Roman era, when it was situated along a vital route for the empire. The castle has received international attention and support. Since 2000, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture has undertaken significant direct efforts, resulting in the restoration and rehabilitation of the ancient Masyaf Castle. This included training local staff, repurposing certain spaces within the castle to serve as a visitor center and exhibition hall, and providing the castle with essential facilities and services to ensure a suitable experience for visitors and tourists. The restoration work also encompassed the city's historic market, giving it a new look that underscores the principle of preserving the city's heritage [1]. The city's name is linked to its citadel, which sits atop a rocky outcrop stretching from north to south. Dating back to the Roman and Byzantine periods, it was built as a military base to secure the routes connecting the coast to the interior. Beyond securing these routes, it also controlled a network of roads and passages that were vital to the Romans and Byzantines. These routes provided access to Tripoli in the Levant, passing through Wadi al-Nasara, Burj Suleiman, and Safita Castle, then to Antioch via Abu Qubays Castle and Harem, and to the Beqaa Valley in Lebanon via Akkar Castle. From there, the route led to Homs via Baarin Castle and the Homs Plain, and finally to Aleppo via Burj Jarjarah, Hama, and Ma'arrat al-Nu'man. These roads and paths were also traversed by trade caravans, giving the citadel economic importance in addition to its military significance. A defensive wall surrounds the citadel, most of which remains intact on the eastern side. The walls on the other sides have become integrated into the existing structure. The citadel has gates whose names correspond to the four cardinal directions. Only one gate remains, still retaining its original form. To the west of the city, on the summit of a mountain adjacent to Mount Mashhad, lies another fortress, the fortress of al-Qahir. It was built during the reign of Sinan Rashid al-Din, whose era was characterized by stability. Masyaf attracted many philosophers, poets, and preachers: Mazid al-Hilli, Nur al-Din Ahmad, Muhammad al-Rafni, and Hassan al-Baza'i.
