Maharashtra ranks third in banana production, but Jalgaon, a region within the state, is the number one exporter of bananas in India. Known as the "Banana Capital," Jalgaon's bananas received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2016, helping farmers like Prafull Mahajan expand their reach into global markets. Prafull has been doing banana cultivation since 2000. Initially, he used flood irrigation, but now practices drip irrigation. He grows bananas using tissue culture techniques, and with raised-bed farming, excess water does not damage the plants. In addition to banana cultivation, he is also involved in banana trading, purchasing bananas from around 300 farmers. He handles approximately 1,000 tons of production annually and earns a profit of around ₹55 crores. He cultivates bananas on about 100-125 acres, planting approximately 100,000 plants. Prafull comes from a well-established family, with one brother being a doctor abroad and another a software engineer in Pune. Yet, with the use of technology in farming, Prafull’s income surpasses even traditional salaried jobs.
