Coimbra: The Library Protected by Bats | Portugal’s 700-Year University #quizzeswithflare

Yesterday we were exploring the colourful canals of Aveiro and the striped houses of Costa Nova. Today we headed inland. About 45 minutes from Porto, the road climbs gently into one of Portugal’s most fascinating cities: Coimbra. A hilltop university town where knowledge has been shaping minds for more than seven centuries. Long before Lisbon became the capital… before Portugal even looked the way it does today… students here were already studying medicine, philosophy, law — and probably pulling a few very late nights. But Coimbra has one feature that no other university can claim. Its library has security guards. And they fly. Inside the Joanina Library, a colony of bats comes out after dark to eat the insects that could damage centuries-old books. Nature handling conservation. Quietly. Efficiently. Just below the university lies another surprise — the Academic Prison, where students who broke university rules were once jailed under academic law. Above ground, the campus softens beautifully at the Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra, created in the 1700s as a living laboratory for scientists studying plants from across the Portuguese empire. Today it’s one of the calmest corners of the city — winding paths, historic greenhouses, and an unexpectedly towering bamboo forest. And just beside the hill flows the Mondego River, reflecting the city’s layered skyline — churches, lecture halls, and seven hundred years of learning rising above the water. Coimbra isn’t flashy.
