I Flew Into The Most Remote Bear Country In The Lower 48

BEAR BENDER heads into the Idaho backcountry. In Episode 2 of our 2026 Spring Bear series, Matt, and Jed fly deep into one of the most remote wilderness areas in the Lower 48 for stop number two of the “Four Bears Four States” challenge. The goal is simple: hunt bears in four different states in 40 days and try to figure out which state in the Lower 48 has the best spring bear hunting. After kicking things off in Utah, we pointed the truck north and headed for Idaho — but this wasn’t your average bear hunt. To get into this country, we loaded our gear into a small plane and flew into a tiny backcountry airstrip surrounded by steep mountains, thick timber, deep canyons, and endless bear country. No roads. No quick exit. Just backpacks, rifles, optics, long glassing sessions, and a whole lot of country to pick apart. This hunt had everything we love about spring bear hunting: glassing big drainages, hiking nasty terrain, checking green hillsides, looking for fresh bear sign, and trying to turn up a mature black bear in some of the wildest country Idaho has to offer. Being this far from civilization changes everything. Every decision matters, every mile feels longer, and every bear encounter gets your heart pumping a little harder. Idaho was a completely different challenge than Utah, and that’s exactly what makes this series so fun. New state, new country, new bear behavior, and a new test for the Bear Bender crew.
