On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie Chotek were assassinated by a Serbian youth, Gavrilo Princip. At the time, Bosnia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but the Archduke and his wife were visiting Sarajevo to attend a ceremony. The couple were assassinated by six members of the Black Hand, an organization advocating Greater Serbianism. Following this incident, the Austro-Hungarian Empire issued an ultimatum to the Kingdom of Serbia, but negotiations between the two countries failed, resulting in a breakdown of diplomatic relations. The following month, on July 28, the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on the Kingdom of Serbia, marking the outbreak of World War I. Vienna, Austria, was the base of the Habsburg family. Schönbrunn Palace has a Japanese garden. This monument was built by Archduke Ferdinand after his return from a visit to Japan, before he was assassinated in Sarajevo. In 1892, Archduke Ferdinand embarked on a year-long round-the-world tour, during which he visited Japan. At this time, the Archduke meticulously documented the scenery and traditional culture of Japan in his journal, which was later compiled and published. The impetus for the Archduke's travels abroad stemmed from his visit to St. Petersburg in 1891 to have an audience with the Russian Emperor. Archduke Ferdinand desired to gain knowledge of different nations, peoples, cultures, and customs, appreciate foreign art, and experience the inexhaustible natural beauty of foreign lands firsthand, leading him to begin his round-the-world trip. One of his destinations was Japan, where he stayed for about a month. He traveled from Hong Kong to Nagasaki, then through Kumamoto, Shimonoseki, and Miyajima before visiting Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, and Otsu. Afterward, he went to Tokyo, where he had an audience with Emperor Meiji and received a warm welcome from the Japanese government. He then visited Nikko Toshogu Shrine and was greeted by Matsudaira Katamori (lord of the Aizu domain), who was serving as the chief priest. He experienced Japanese culture for the first time, marveling at the cleanliness of the city and the openness of the houses. He even observed a woman's hair being styled and experienced the pleasures of a tea house. In Hakone, he had a dragon tattooed on his left arm. Archduke Ferdinand meticulously recorded his observations of Japanese scenery and traditional culture during this time in his memoirs, which were later compiled and published. In 1913, the Austrian Crown Prince commissioned an Austrian gardener to create a Japanese garden based on imitation.
