Reptile Hobby Requires Custom Shed

Earl Jones is the owner of Lone Star Reptiles in Alvarado, Texas. At age 11, Earl began working with venomous snakes. Eventually he began raising pythons to sell as pets. He needed a building for the business and had a small 12x12 Ulrich Barns hobby shed built on a concrete slab. But maintaining 70 percent humidity is crucial to raising the animals, and the concrete floor absorbed too much of the moisture in the building. With up to 700 snakes at a time, Earl also ran out of room. Earl needed very specific customizations for a larger building, and he checked with other shed companies to do the job. Only Ulrich Barns would build the new hobby shed according to his needs. A 14x32 Pro Gable Cabin with a porch was the largest building he could get on his land. He wanted only a door and no windows. Earl needed the floor insulated and lined with rubber, as well as having Rhino bedliner on the walls to keep the humidity high. The ball python, one of Earl's favorites, is one of the most sought-after animals in the pet trade because of its size and gentleness. Because of Ulrich's unique customizations to his hobby shed, Earl is able to successfully raise these more fragile kinds of pythons. But with about 500 snakes, he's outgrowing this building too. He's working with Ulrich Barns again to build an even bigger hobby shed. "Ulrich was the one company that would listen to what we had to say, and they did it our way," Earl says. "And that meant a lot of us."
