The map of the world seems to us eternal and unshakable — but right now one of the continents of our planet is slowly tearing apart. Africa, the cradle of humanity, is cracking at the seams in the most literal sense of the word. A gigantic rift more than 6,000 kilometers long runs through its eastern part, and one day the waters of the world ocean will pour into this wound. A new, sixth ocean will be born on Earth. In this video we will travel to the Afar Depression in northern Ethiopia, where in 2005 the desert split apart by 60 kilometers in just one week, making scientists disbelieve their own instruments. We will recall the dramatic story of Alfred Wegener — a scientist who was ridiculed for the idea of continental drift, yet turned out to be right. We will descend into the scorching Danakil Depression — the "gates of hell," where temperatures soar past 50 degrees, and nomads have been mining salt for centuries at the bottom of the future sea. You will learn what force is tearing apart a continent tens of kilometers thick, what the African Superplume is, and why this rift may have been what made us human. We will look millions of years into the future, where the Somali Plate drifts off into the Indian Ocean, and a young sea laps where East Africa once stood. This is not a catastrophe or the end of the world — it is a majestic geological process. And we are incredibly lucky: we are the first generation in Earth's history capable of witnessing the birth of an ocean and understanding exactly what we are seeing.
