The term "death game" refers to a genre of fiction, or an element therein, in which the protagonists are implicated in a game that ultimately leads to the death of some or all of the participants. Akita seems to be likening the modern world to a death game, and he employs terms alluding to the mystery genre while doing so. For example, the term "クローズドサークル", or "closed circle" refers to mysteries where the possible suspects are limited and their motivations are presented to the reader. Another example, 密室 or "locked room" (alluding to 密室殺人, "locked room murder") refers to a subgenre of mystery in which the crime under investigation shouldn't have been possible under normal circumstances (for example, a murder occurring in a locked room)
