This installment is the direct sequel to Gears of War, released two years earlier. It tells the story of what happened after the successful activation of the Lightmass Bomb within the Hollow, which the Locust Horde surprisingly survived, returning with an even greater force. The Coalition of Ordered Governments must now eliminate the threat at its source. Gears of War 2 begins six months after the events of Gears of War. Although much of the Locust Horde was defeated after the Lightmass Bomb detonation, the explosion also had severe consequences for the human population. It caused Imulsion, a phosphorescent liquid substance, to vaporize and emerge from the ground, causing deadly lung diseases among the human race. As humanity struggles to survive this new threat, a new and coordinated Locust attack manages to capture several human capital cities, which slowly succumb to the enemy offensive.
